A Plate and a Pantry

Happy Monday!  Although maybe you'll be reading this on Tuesday. I'm really late posting today but it has been a busy day A hot one again. Got the laundry done and the houseplants watered ( Monday's jobs) ; outside watering will have to wait until the cool of the evening.

When I was last at the thrift store I picked up this pretty little plate. It's just so cheery. I used it today to put my afternoon snack on...cold juicy watermelon. Perfect for this late summer day.

Years ago I did a lot of needlepoint. Two of the samplers I made have been languishing in a drawer until today. I asked DH if he'd hang them over the freezer in the walk-in pantry.

The pantry was not part of the original house but gradually rooms got added here and there. The pantry was the first I think.  I had an old window that I wanted to use in it ( the kind that pushes up)  and the screen is also very old. It is about 8" high and adjustable as to width.  Another sampler hangs to the right of the window.

Green beans are in full production now and supper today is green bean soup with Summer Savoury to give it the flavour that I remember from my childhood. The soup also has new potatoes in it (from our garden where we managed to find room for a couple of potato plants). Soup and homemade bread is my kind of supper in any season.

Leave a comment so I know you came by.  Reading your comments brightens my day!!

  1. Watermelon is a snack here too on these hot days.
All of your things are so pretty. What happens when you run out of room to decorate?

  6. I agree 100%!!! Soup is great any day of the year. The samplers are nice, but the stained glass window is THE focal point for me

  7. What a pretty window. Like you, I have cross stitch pictures from many years ago, and they are put away now. Maybe I need to get them out!

  8. Your pantry is so well organized and neat. Mine is always a disaster it seems with things stashed willy nilly on the open shelves. Here too the green beans are in full season. I blanched and froze another 16 cups from yesterday's picking. By now I have more than I need but no one is interested in coming to pick them (for free) but it seems a shame to let them go to waste.

  9. Your stained glass window is so pretty, the window looks great. Mr D and I had watermelon for our dessert last night, it was so good. I bet it would have tasted even better on a pretty plate like yours. :)

  10. That watermelon is making me long for summer! The plate was a pretty find, and your needlework looks great hanging up. I simply adore the stained glass panel with the hummingbird - it would make me smile every time I walked into your pantry :)

  11. Oh that plate is lovely, I like the edges a little bit scalloped. Oh that pantry, is adorable. I would love to have a side room for something just like this. Needlepoint? GM you've said you are not crafty at all. Those are so cute hanging in there, you did a really nice job on them, I've no patience for that, tried and tried. I'll stick with the hook n yarn.

  12. What a lovely plate made better by the watermelon on it. :)
Your needle work is very pretty. It looks more like counted cross stitch to me than needlepoint though. :)

  13. How I would love to have a window in my pantry. Tasha Tudor had one in her buttery which I assume is about the same thing as a pantry. Now I am wishing I had brought home a melon from the grocery. No one in this house eats melons except me, so I always eat way too much.

  15. Hmmmmmm!! Green beans with Summer Savoury and new potatoes! You produced fine needlepoint! Good to find a nice place to see it always. Monday is also a long work-day for me, because I have to clean the house. What a pretty plate!

  16. I would love to have a pantry! I do love that window...and love the plate you found. I agree with Henny...you find some of the prettiest things. And you know how to show them to advantage.
