Thursday Trivia

First thing this morning we went to do the weekly grocery shopping.  After we got the groceries unpacked DH left for Gleaners taking with him one of the Christmas Stollen I had made for the annual Christmas lunch.   My recipe makes quite a few and these days I am not able to knead such a large lump of dough so he did all the hard work.  If you're not familiar with Stollen you can find lots of recipes and info on-line.

Kate sent me this picture of her kitties watching birds out her glass door.  The kitty on the right is the one of Miss Kitty's 5 babies that Kate chose.

Years ago I gathered driftwood pieces and some other bits and painted these Santas.
DH does not like them and asked me NOT to put them inside so here they are out the back door.

Eldest son also has a problem with them and thinks they look weird. Other members of the family have chosen not to comment. *smiling here*.

That's it for today. I think I'll bake some cookies later otherwise Not much is happening.

I hope your day is a good one,  GM

  6. My mother made every Christmas-time five or six big original Dresdner Stollen -she was born in Dresden! Now my sister Gelia makes this fine tradition and her son. A heavy work to knead such a large lump of dough ! You have a wonderful dear husband. A smile is running over my face, when I read, that your men and familymembrs don't love too much the funny wooden Saints :) You arranged them very nice! Here I also see such kind of wooden figures. They look good on this place! Good work of you!

I LOVE the photo with the kitten! i always feel happy to read news about them. What a blessing!

  9. Your Santa Clauses look great on that blue dresser and on the window... beautiful... little naive art. I like.
It's great that you're making stollen. Here with us, the Christmas stollen has a long tradition. The "Striezel" used to be called and that's why the Christmas market is also called "Striezelmarkt", this year it's the 588 and it runs from 23.11. until 24.12.
We cut our Dresdner Stollen on the 1st of Advent... I always buy this from my baker... we have at least 300 bakers in the city of Dresden.
Lots of love to you. Baking cookies is wonderful, I have already baked and will bake more until Christmas.

  10. Well, I think your Santas are delightful! I love color and these are certainly colorful. :) I used to make kringla at Christmas. Similar, but more of a flaky texture with almonds. Happy Christmas creativity! Love you, friend!

  12. Your stollen makes my mouth water, remembering when I used to go with my father to get stollen at Christmastime after my mother died. We would drive up in the mountains a ways to a German bakery and candy shop, and bring home a few loaves, to keep us through Christmas. The last time I ate any was the last time we did that, about 20 years ago...
