A Surprise Visitor and Dog Treats

It was another lovely day and while puttering outside my DH and I heard  what we thought was an extra noisy Flicker. To our surprise this handsome fellow landed on the power pole in front of our house. He stayed for a minute or two then with more of his noisy call he flew away. I'm so glad we were out there at the right time to see him.. We used to see these when we lived in the country but never before right in town.

These pictures are off the internet.

The Pileated Woodpecker is one of the biggest, most striking forest birds on the continent. It’s  the size of a very large crow, black with bold white stripes down the neck and a flaming-red crest.

Something I've never tried to do is make home made dog treats but I found a very easy recipe that called for just 3 ingredients... an egg, peanut butter, flour ,and a bit of water. No need to make them look nice. Bracken will not take time to admire them before gobbling them up.

Thanks for coming by,

  2. What a beautiful woodpecker! I've not seen one in person...but the second picture you shared with it in flight is just stunning. That is quite a wing span and what beauty it shows off! Let us know how Bracken liked his homemade treats.

  3. Oh, cool! PW's are my favorite birds! I glanced out my kitchen window a couple of days ago just in time to see one flash by. I've seen a couple of them in the pines outside my window. It's such a treat to see them!

  4. They are a handsome in their own right. I had always wanted to see one and kept an eye out for years. I could hear them chopping on the trees in our woods but they seem to be so elusive. Finally a year ago summer while I was working in the green house I spotted a woodpecker on a nearby tree. I eased my way out the door and to my amazement there it was, a pileated woodpecker - yeah!
I am sure Bracken will enjoy his treats and will be looking for more!!

  9. The pileated woodpecker is often seen here but I've never gotten a good picture of them. Those treats look amazing and how wonderful that there's only three ingredients in them! Much better to make your own!
