Aprons
Not having anything much to blog about today I thought I'd do a short post on aprons. My mom always wore an apron. Her everyday ones were practical and she had some really pretty ones for Sundays. When unexpected company came down our long driveway she would whip off her old apron and quickly tie on a clean one.
Her aprons had other uses than keeping her dress clean. She'd use it to bring in eggs from the hen house or vegetables from the garden. It was useful for drying a child's tears ( and mom was not above using it to wipe a child's nose).
I have some lovely aprons and try to remember to use one when I'm working in the kitchen. None of mine look like the ones in these ads from the early 1900 's .
Did your mother wear an apron most days? I'd love to hear your memories.
Thanks for visiting,
Granny M.

Both my grandmothers wore aprons!
ReplyDeleteMy one grandmother had one for every occasion.
Never saw my mother in one and I don't wear them either.
Oh, yes, my mom always wore an apron...you can go to my blog and in the upper left hand corner enter the word apron and up will pop posts...she used it to gather stuff...always had one on.
ReplyDeleteI have an apron I wear to keep grease from splattering on my clothes. I love to make aprons cause you don't have to worry about fit so much.
I did go and search your blog for posts about aprons and found an absolutely lovely one you made and posted about on April 6, 2009.
DeleteMy mother did wear aprons sometimes, but I certainly remember my grandmother wearing them. I frequently wear an apron too, but nothing like these fancy ones.
ReplyDeleteMy mother would sometimes wear an apron in the kitchen when cooking. I think I inherited my apron love from my paternal grandmother who always wore one. She had a special apron to wear when feeding chickens and collecting eggs, and some lovely fancy ones for when visitors came as well. She would often buy/sell aprons through Women's Institute meetings and I frequently received one as a birthday present. I wish now that I had kept some of them.
ReplyDelete"Aprons" is always a great subject for a post! My mom always wore an apron in the kitchen, and I usually do too! To make myself a new apron is on my list of things to do this year.
ReplyDeleteWhen you get it done I'd love for you to post a picture.
DeleteI don't think my mother wore an apron, but my grandmother did for sure. And I learned early on as a housewife that if I didn't have one on, I could not apply myself fully to my work for fear of ruining my clothes, so I wore one constantly. They are really great for carrying lots of things! Eggs, yes, but even a few fruits or vegetables if you forgot to take a basket out to the garden.
ReplyDeleteDid your mother have any like the pretty ones in these old pictures?
If I remember correctly mom's aprons were quite plain, with a pocket, of course, and sometimes a frill made with the same fabric.
DeleteI LOVE aprons and wear them daily for the most part! I don't remember my Mom wearing them but she does have a drawer for them in the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteMy Mom and my Gandma always wore aprons at home. I have them, but never seem to remember to put them on. I really want to be better about wearing them. Thanks for the reminder and I really enjoyed the photos of the old aprons.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Yes my dear Mum did and still does wear an apron and do I. I love the beautiful styles of the ones you have shared. You have inspired me to try and find a pattern to make a couple.
ReplyDeleteI love the old traditional kinds of aprons, so pretty.
ReplyDeleteLovely aprons on the old ads! But I don't think I would use them for working in the kitchen :) My mother also always wore apron, and the newest one was for Sundays. When I cook and bake I always use an apron to keep my clothes clean. I sew them in a simple style, but I love to use nice fabric. One of my aprons is made of a fabric with aprons on!
ReplyDeleteI don't really remember seeing my mom or grandmas wearing aprons. Those in the pictures are pretty cute!
ReplyDeleteI don't remember my mum wearing an apron, but she had what was called an overall, I think. (this was back in England). Kind of the same thing as a house dress I believe. Light blue out of some weird nylony type fabric is my memory. I wear aprons all the time when I am cooking or making jam.
ReplyDeleteI make aprons but don't wear one. I like to make them, because, as Rose said, I don't have to worry about fit.
ReplyDeleteMy mother only wears half-aprons that come to the waist, and I only wear bib aprons - I like long ones that give lots of coverage. I get quite wet when washing dishes. And yes, I love to use them to carry eggs, garden veggies, clippers when I'm pruning, or snacks for chickens. I dislike an apron without pockets. Henny Penny makes absolutely divine aprons. Have you seen hers?
ReplyDeleteI remember mom wearing half aprons that tied at the waist but all of mine are full aprons cut in a "butcher" style pattern which are so easy to sew up. I seem to use mine alot to dry my wet hands from the dish water! I have just laundered and put away my Christmas aprons and while doing so, realize that I don't have any for Valentine's Day so will have to take a detour and visit the fabric store! I do love those vintage patterns you posted!

Thank you for the wonderful topic and the fantastic pictures.
ReplyDeleteMy mother wore shooters, just like her mother.
I live in the zeitgeist (time type) where no apron is worn ... but I have two very old ones from my mother and on special days I wear them.
Greetings from Viola
In the blogg with my you can see the Dresdner Frauenkirche / Church of our lady in Dresden/East Germany.
My Grandmother wore an apron most days. My Mother In Law used an apron everyday when she was in the kitchen. I have an apron soomeplace:)
ReplyDeleteLoved your post and the wonderful photos of vintage aprons. I can't imagine wearing such lovely aprons for housework, I think they would be worn more for decoration than usefulness. For me , aprons are an essential part of my wardrobe. I don't feel fully dressed without my apron on. I like the full vintage styles, not liking the so called unisex butcher aprons worn mostly now. Grace.
