On our morning walk we saw the first families of geese of 2021. This little family just had a few goslings.
There was another family group grazing nearby; this family had a large number of babies.
While we stood watching the babies from family #1 got mixed up with those of the second family and when the poor couple whose little ones were now part of the bigger bunch tried to get their babies back both of the other couple took after them and chased them away. You can see by the way this goose holds its head that it is in fighting mode.
We felt sorry for the first couple but there wasn't anything we could do to help.

Well that really is sad. You would think the two babies would know who they belong with, but I guess not!
ReplyDeleteWow! I didn't know geese kidnapped each other's babies! Well, the babies will be taken care of anyway. Hopefully geese are more forgetful than humans!
ReplyDeleteThat is so tragic!!
ReplyDeleteI thought babies imprinted with their mothers so this wouldn't happen. Maybe they just wanted more playmates? I suspect the couple with only two had already lost some to predators.
ReplyDeleteCanada Goose families are known to intermix so 4 parent geese supervise all the young geese, but obviously not without strife!
ReplyDeleteO what happened! Incredible!
ReplyDeleteI really hope, that the parents with the big family (now bigger!) is able to feed them all! The other parents maybe will make new eggs - - - I always admire animals: they are very devote and take their story of life from God's hand - - -
Oh my goodness, I never heard of a Canada goose stealing somebody else's babies. Yikes. I would hate to see that. I know that the geese are monogamous so I would have figured they would respect each others families. What do I know.
ReplyDeleteAww the goslings wanted more siblings!
ReplyDeleteGood gravy, that is sad. The poor mama and daddy geese! I hope they can heal their little hearts and have another clutch of eggs.
ReplyDeletemy goodness! God bless these birds! how complicated! :(
ReplyDeleteLovely photos of the Geese and Goslings G.M. - your really good with the Camera. Regards. KEV.
ReplyDeleteThat is so sad...I would never have dreamed something like this would happen. Nature sure is interesting.
ReplyDeleteLove looking at the wonderful pictures. That's an incredible story those about the goslings. WOW! Maybe God knows best here even in a gosling situation. I hope that your day is wonderful to you. Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteI hope they will find their parents how sad.
ReplyDeleteWell. That is so sad for the parents and really interesting that the other couple would take to the new kids so quickly. I wonder if they thought they were their own and if they will realize it in time? I hope Mom and Dad can hatch some new babies quickly.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Oh my didn't think that could happen. Those geese are kidnappers!!
ReplyDeleteOh dear, that is very sad. Perhaps they got sorted out later. I certainly hope so!
ReplyDeleteOh, how sad!
ReplyDeleteI also thought the babies imprinted with their mothers; hopefully, they got sorted out later on. They are darling babies, though!
ReplyDeleteThat is so sad! You are right though it is impossible to interfere with nature. Beautiful photos.
ReplyDeleteAh, that is not funny. But I love your photos.
ReplyDeleteI know this has no connection to your post but I don't have your email. Thank you for the plant suggestion. It's a great one. I do love plants and this is a south facing window so I hope to finally be able to have some again. Our last house didn't have any good windows to let in diffused light that plants like. I'll have to ask Dennis his opinion. :-)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
That would be hard to watch!
ReplyDeleteThat's so sad! I didn't know birds would "kidnap" other young so easily!
