This and That

Lilacs are blooming and whenever I pass a bush blooming close to the street I stop to breathe in the wonderful scent.  Our extremely tall lilac has a couple of blooms that could only be reached by standing on the playhouse roof which is 14 ft high. I think because we always cut large bouquets now there are no flowers lower down.  This bush is temptingly close to the sidewalk.

The sun came out and I put the tomato plants out to get them used to being outside. Unfortunately tomorrow it will be back to cloudy and some rain.

One of the local grocery stores had a special on US strawberries 2 lbs for $3.49 . I picked up 5 of the plastic cartons and later went back for more because they were quite tasty. Too bad there were none left.  Our local berries won't be ready until the end of the month at the earliest. I only wish that they didn't come packaged in plastic but at least it can be recycled.

I baked cupcakes for the freezer. It's so handy to have them on hand for unexpected visitors ( mainly our children and grands).

Besides baking I have been doing some Spring cleaning. This week I worked on getting the living room done.  I'm about finished with that.

So what have you been busy with?  I hope the sun is shining wherever you live and that you are enjoying this last week of April.

  1. Our Lilacs won't be in bloom for ages yet, maybe 6 weeks!

  2. Your day was full! I love lilacs, both the smell and their leaves and the color of the blooms! Your tomatoes are such a good dark green color. It is drizzling and extremely chilly here for the time of year it is.

  3. Oh I wish I could smell those lilacs in your pictures......I love that smell. It will be a long time before our lilacs bloom, like your above reader said. Your cupcakes look delish. and so do the strawberries. Can't believe we're finally getting out of winter months and into months when produce is so much better!

  4. No lilacs here yet but just today saw the leaves starting on some that I walk by. Love the smell of them. Strawberries look delicious. I have a pack of my own here. :). Great idea to keep some cupcakes on hand. I do that with chocolate chip cookies - they seem to be everyones favorite here.

  6. You've been busy. I haven't seen any lilacs yet, it's usually around Memorial Day here when they bloom. I planted some geraniums and an ornamental grass in a pot in the backyard and that night the motion lights came on by the shed and I looked out. There was a deer eating the geraniums! It ate the flowers and pulled the plants up and spit them on the ground. They were still green so the next morning I replanted them. I think I'll replace them with marigolds because in the past I've found that deer don't seem to like marigolds.
I hope your Friday is wonderful. My sweet Piper doesn't have school tomorrow, so she's spending the night with me tonight! It's the first time she's stayed with me by herself. I love it and hope it's the first of many times. We read the first chapter of "Little House in the Big Woods" together from the set of books I had as a little girl, written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  8. Bud & I are still busy cutting freeze-killed plants & trees from February. Those that are subtropical. And on free time, I go birding to see the beautiful migrating warblers!

Your cupcakes look delicious. And I love lilacs.(they don't thrive this far south on the coast).

  12. How I would love to take a sniff of that gorgeous lilac. They don't do well here so I satisfy my longing with a lilac scented candle. Not quite the same, however.
Your tomato plants look very healthy.
That is a great idea to freeze the cupcakes. I may need to try that as occasionally my husband and I have a craving for chocolate cake, but a whole cake for 2 people is a bit much. Taking a couple of cupcakes from the freezer would be a nice way to portion control. Thank you for that suggestion.
Around here we are enjoying watching the birds make nests and spending time in the garden. Enjoy your weekend.

  15. Lilacs have a truly intoxicating scent. I love them! Your tomato plants are doing very well. Did you begin them from seeds? Mine are quite slow this year. Having treats in the freezer is a good idea!

  17. Lilacs are so lovely, makes me think of Dad who so loved them...."fleida" as he called them. My dream has always been to visit Mackinac Island in the peak of all their lilacs in bloom! It will be quite awhile before we enjoy any lilacs in bloom here but they are beginning to green up a wee bit. What a great price for the strawberries! Lucky you! Your baking looks delish as always!

    Lieve groet,
    Ger

  20. You're making me hungry again! Ha ha. I'm back on bland foods because my acid reflux is coming back. Waaa! We used to have a nice big lilac at our farm. Such a sweet scent! Hoping for good weather for your tomatoes! :)
