House Plants

My Terracotta Amaryllis has opened and although she's not as flashy as the Clown ones she makes a nice splash of her own. As you can see I've had to tie a ribbon on to her because she was having a hard time supporting the heavy flower stalk.

I seem to have a lot of annoying little flies that live in the soil. I ordered more of the little "fruit fly" traps.  The white paper gets peeled off and the underneath is very sticky. You can see how many flies have stuck onto them below.

On a more pleasant note...my Christmas/Thanksgiving Cactus has a few flowers again.

Today's teacup

Thanks for visiting today.  I hope you have a lovely weekend.

  3. It has been fascinating looking at other Amaryllis, all different and all lovely. The fruit fly thingy is such a good idea, I must see if we have them here.

  4. Wonderfulflowers1 I think, the little fruit flies love the sweet taste! :)

Ma son has bought a simple prison for these little flies: You put a piece if lemon inside, the flies go in and are in prison, and then you can bring them to a place, where they are far away.

Thse sentence of David Hobson is good!

  13. When I see your beautiful Amaryllis in bloom I am sorry that I discarded all of mine. About the little flies, I got rid of alot of mine by watering the plants with a hydrogen peroxide/water solution but yes, they are a nuisance! And thanks for sharing the David Hobson quote!

  15. Beautiful amaryllis flowers. I had to tie mine up, too. Now they are all done. Your Christmas cactus is at the same stage as mine. I don't think I've ever seen a yellow one. Very pretty.

  17. You truly have a green thumb! Never knew anything about the fly paper. It sure seems to work well. You're inspiring me. Maybe when I get home, I'll find myself a house plant and see if I can keep it alive.

  18. Fungus gnats and I hate them...the sticky traps work great...if you let the soil get really dry they will die out:) That is a real pretty flower:)

  20. Those little flies are tiny so I don't know if this trick will work for them or not, but I was watching a gardening video the other day and this lady had a fly problem in her chicken coop. She heard that planting Lemon Balm would keep flies away. So, she planted Lemon Balm around her chicken coop and she said that instead of seeing hundreds of flies now she sees one or two now and then. If decided to plant some in pots this year and put them next to my front and back doors. We have never had a problem until last year . . . so I think this is certainly worth a try.
