Candlemas and Amaryllis

Today is Candlemas and traditionally pancakes are eaten today. So that's what we'll have. Today is exactly 40 days since Christmas and the midway point between winter and spring.

This was what my Amaryllis looked like when I potted them up on January 2.

Now they're blooming and brightening up my sunroom.  At least two of them are blooming. The third has not opened yet. The Paperwhites that I bought at the same time are very tall and wanting to fall over so I cut them down.

Reply:  Sandy, I don't know how old my Mom's Singer is but 70 years ago it was already in our home, under a window where Mom could sew where the light was good.

 Today's teacup

 Thanks for coming by,  GM

  2. What unusual markings on your Amaryllis, so pretty. I am waiting for the bud on the second stem on mine to open up. Any day now!

  3. I didn't know that about pancakes and Candlemas. If you mentioned it before I completely forgot it. This year Candlemas landed on a Wednesday which is a fast day for us Orthodox, so I won't respond to the pancake idea, though it sounds nice, and your picture is especially inviting!!

Happy Candlemas/Purification/Meeting of the Lord/Presentation of Christ in the Temple! (Our priest told us all the names this morning :-) )

  6. Gorgeous blooms! Aren't they happy? A friend gave me an amaryllis for Christmas, one with wax around the bulb. It bloomed like crazy, and now has a single spear coming up in the middle of the dead blooms.

  7. Happy Candlemess! O: exact 40 days!! Here in Bavaria we also have old customs on candlemess, for example the blessing of candles in the church. The pancakes look very delicious and fluffy! The Amarillis love you!

  13. I did not know about Candlemas. Thank you for educating me and I sure wish I had some pancakes with you. Those look delicious.
Your amaryllis is absolutely gorgeous. All of your plants look wonderful. Someday I'm going to thing of buying paperwhite and amaryllis in the wintertime for some pretty color.

  15. Hard to believe it's been that many days since Christmas. Your amaryllis and paper whites are a lovely sight. Makes me wish I had bought more amaryllis.

  16. Your flowers are beautiful! In Norway there is no traditions for celebrating Candlemas. I made pancakes that day, but I didn't know about the pancake tradition. In Norway we have pancakes for dinner, we have the crepes kind of pancake.

  18. Because of low natural light in my house, even in a south facing window in winter, my amaryllis is very tall and threatens to fall over. The first two blooms are fading but the third one will last a while.
Yours are beautiful. I like what you did with your paperwhites. Only one of mine bloomed.
