Reading and Baking

Mainly cloudy day with a temperature of 7C ( 45F).  Had a lovely walk and saw even more swans. I think we counted 25 adults and a juvenile.  When we were on our way back home they flew over and we stood and marveled at the size of them.  Searching through my bird book I think they must be Tundra swans.

Are you a Susan Branch fan?  I have several of her books and am currently rereading  A Fine Romance,  Falling in Love with the English Countryside. She includes a number of recipes in the book and  she inspired me to make popovers which turned out pretty good.

I also made the recipe for Lemon Butter cookies. I wondered how the corn meal would be in a cookie but the texture is lovely. Definitely a recipe I will make again.

I'm not sure where I got this recipe but I remembered how much we enjoyed it when I did make it. Dill bread.  I made the dough in the breadmaker.  The dill flavour was very subtle and next time I'll add even more dried dill.    I asked middle son how he had liked it and he replied that he thought it was ordinary bread and put peanut butter on it.  :)

  8. Reading and baking : This combination is fine! You make the author of this lovely book and the visitors and familymembers of your house a great joy. Baking makes happy: the baker and the receiver! . . . .

  9. I have been wanting to try my hand at popovers, but it is still just a thought in the back of my head. It's very hard to bake when it's just me. When it's my turn to bring cookies to our Sunday school class, I always insist that everyone has to take another or two home, because if they come home with me, I will eat them until they are gone. That's why I gained weight this winter . . . too many sweets and comfort food.

  10. I would like to try both of those recipes, I mean, the popovers and the cookies. I remember the first time I ate popovers, as a child. I was smitten! I made them often when my children were young... I think that when the house got fuller it was hard to make enough popovers to satisfy the crowd! But now... no crowd!! Thank you for the inspiration.

  11. I always love it when you bake, because everything you make looks so good! I can almost taste those lemon cookies! And I have been thinking about making popovers for over a year...but haven't done it yet. I do love them! Your bread looks great too!

  13. I do like Susan Branch too. Those popovers, cookies and the bread all look yummy. I can imagine how good your kitchen must have smelled after all of that baking. It was mid 50's here today so Papa and I took Piper to the zoo. We had a lovely time although my back only let us go about 1/8 of the zoo. That's okay. We bought an annual pass so we can go back as often as we want. When the kids were little and we lived her, I used to take them every week from opening until lunchtime when we would go home and have lunch. It was wonderful to see different areas every week.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  17. Everything looks so yummy. I wish I would come across some of Susan Branch's books here but so far, no luck. In regards to how old your Singer Sewing machine is, here is the link to a website that identifies the age according to their serial number:

I would be interested to know from what year it dates!

  18. When we had a vacation home on Rainy Lake, in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota (it was actually on the Canadian side), everyone up there was INSANE on the subject of popovers. Popovers were eaten constantly! I have a good recipe for them, too. Yours look especially tall and fluffy!
