Two small projects

I know I've shown my well-loved porch swing many times. I like to have a couple of different quilts to change off  ( the material underneath it is very old and the quilt covers it nicely. This quilt is one I bought (along with a pillow sham) last spring. The quilt was probably a king size and every time I tried to straighten it on the swing it bunched up. Yesterday I had enough. I found a spot where I could spread it out and cut the excess off. It was hard to do because I felt I was ruining the quilt but I knew if I didn't I'd keep disliking the "bunching". I'm happy to say this was a success.

I should add that this quilt isn't really quilted. The material is patchwork if that makes sense. It has a filling though and a very nice fabric on the back.

Not such a success with my jam today. The jam turned out fine but I had the not-so-brilliant idea of using a plastic jar. You can see just what the hot jam did to it. What a mess. I'll stick to glass jars from now on.

Thanks for visiting,

Granny M

  2. I can see where cutting that quilt would be quite difficult but the end result sure is pretty and very functional! That's quite interesting how the jam "melted" the plastic jars. Great conversation pieces! Chris

  3. 000PS. Well, you win some, you lose some. At least you are doing and accomplishing.

  5. This is an interesting juxtaposition of "projects"! I am proud of you for cutting the quilt. It was not at its best in the condition you received it; you had to be bold and make it truly work for you! I believe in the beauty of function. When something is beautiful and useful it's extra beautiful and homey.

  6. That is such a pretty quilt! Love the pinks! It looks like summer to me. Sorry about the jam mess. I've done things like that many times and then thought, "what was I thinking?" ha! Hopefully some of the jam was still salvagable.
We're heading off with the camper tomorrow. I'm so excited!
    Blessings,

  12. Congratulations on a job well done on the quilt resizing. I'm sure it is quite satisfying to not have the extra material to deal with.

  13. Oh no, you can't use plastic. I suppose you could pour it into glass then after it's cooled and set spoon it into plastic? Pretty quilt on your swing. Sounds like cutting it was a good idea.

  17. Bravo for cutting into your quilt to adjust it for your swing. I am in the same predicament having bought a used duvet cover with matching shams with plans to use it for the strips for a blue jean patch blanket (picnic blanket) but the duvet cover is gorgeous and in mint condition so of course it's sitting in my sewing room and staring at me with woeful eyes. Sorry about your jam jar! As long as you didn't burn yourself in the process.

  20. I love your swing and the quilt turned out just perfect! What a shame that the jam melted the plastic jar. The jam looked so good too. Bet it was delicious.

  22. I think it was the right thing to cut the quilt to fit. It looks like it was made for the swing now. Too bad about the plastic jar.
