We walked in a light rain this morning but later the rain came down a lot harder. I'm glad we got our walk in before the deluge. We were thrilled to see a Wood Duck with her 7 babies. In all the years we've never seen baby Wood Ducks....I didn't take the pictures that I'm posting today mainly because I didn't take any in the rain. Isn't it amazing that a duck would choose to nest in a hollow tree? The babies have to be brave and leap to the ground, in this case they would have had to make their way through about 15 feet of tall grass and weeds to reach the water.

We also spotted a Tree Creeper , another rare sighting.....
....and an American Dipper. According to my list of local birds this one shouldn't even be here.
We sure were fortunate to see one. They are usually only found in swiftly running streams but here was one right in Fish Trap Creek where the water didn't seem to be moving at all.

After all that it was time to do the regular Saturday chores.
Thanks for taking time to visit.
Isn't it a thrill to see new/rare species? I watched a documentary once on Wood Ducks, and was astonished at what the little ducklings have to do :)
ReplyDeleteSo nice that you were able to avoid the deluge and see so many interesting birds this morning. I didn't know about the wood ducks nesting in a tree. How interesting.
ReplyDeleteYou are so blessed in your love and feeling for nature! Lovely internet-photos of wonderful birds! I can imagie, that you were fascinated, when you met them on your way. We also have sometimes very strong rain here now - between spots of sun -
ReplyDeleteI didn't know ducks made nests in a hollowed out tree.
ReplyDeleteGlad you made it home before the downpour.
Now that was one productive walk. We have a thrush and oh they sing and sing. Rain overnight tonight and then in the morning.
ReplyDeleteBut clearing in the afternoon.
Cathy
Fun to see birds that are new to your area or just passing through:)
ReplyDeleteCool bird sightings! Ones I've never seen.
ReplyDeleteWow you sure do know your birds and aren't they wonderful. How nice that you got to see them. I really love wood ducks and I bet the little woodies were so sweet. Lucky you! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThis is unspeakable, for a duck to choose a dry branch for its home!! I think such trips give you the opportunity to connect with mother earth and the rest of her creatures and appreciate life better!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week Granny Marigold!
I had no idea about wood ducks. I'm not sure if we have them here.
ReplyDeleteYou were so blessed to see all of those beautiful birds. The babies especially. Isn't it such a wonderful thing to see all of the new babies this time of year?
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Oh, what fun to see baby Wood Ducks...I did not know they nested in trees. Cool sightings of the other birds!
ReplyDeleteYou were granted the privilege of seeing many "special" sightings on your Saturday walk! The little Wood Ducks are so adorable. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us. Glad you got back before the rain started to pour!
ReplyDeleteAww, sweet baby birds!

Maybe these rarely seen little creatures were enjoying the rain. Thanks for sharing with us, have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThat's fascinating info about the Wood Duck. I would never have guessed ducks would be in a tree. How cool you got to see some in person, even if you weren't able to get a photo. You had a good walk, two fold...with your sightings and getting your walk in before the real rain. I had 3 short rows left mowing today just as the rain started, considered myself lucky to get it done.
ReplyDeleteNever seen a wood duck! So funny for ducks to live in a tree?
