Our weather continues to be frosty in the mornings but the clear skies bring lovely afternoons. Lots of ducks and geese on the lake this morning but not many small birds around. Even in my back yard I don't see many. I hope Kitty isn't scaring them away. Normally at this time of the year I'm filling the bird feeder every second day. Not this year.
So what have I been doing? I finally finished this book. I must admit I skimmed some chapters. ( It was over 500 pages and somewhat drawn out.)
I got the Christmas cake made. The recipe I use is from my tattered old copy of Mennonite Treasury of Recipes and is one my mom used to make. In fact, the woman who contributed that recipe was a dear friend of my mom's. A Mrs. Peter Rosenfeld. Remember the days when women didn't use their own first names? Anyway, my cookbook has stains and notations as you can see.
Now I'm going to go sit on the porch with a quilt around me and enjoy the sunshine.
Thanks for coming by, Granny M
Well done on getting the Christmas cake made.
ReplyDeleteChristmas really is getting quite close now.
All the best Jan
Beautiful weather for early winter/late autumn. here in Bavaria it is the same: Cold night, some frosty meadows, but later the sun is coming friendly. I can imagine how fine you sit in the sun, dear Granny Marigold.
ReplyDeleteThis old book full of old recipes from your mom is o precious! I think your family will have a fine Christmas-cake!
Prince Charles had a long life, so the book has a big amount of pages :)
Kitty, please don't catch the birds, you get enough food! Kitti's answer: "I have an heavenly order to catch everything, which is moving!" :)
No sunshine here today.
ReplyDeleteCake looks so good.
Thanks for sharing your recipe - looks delicious! Your copy of the Mennonite Treasury looks well loved! And yes, I remember when we used to be identified by our husband's name - when we got married in 1978 and I made my very first Sears order (via phone), that's how they filled in my name.

Lovely!! Cookbooks with stains tatters and notes are the BEST Cookbooks!
ReplyDeleteYour Christmas cake looks delicious? What's in it? do you make it again at Christmas time? How nice that you can sit out on the porch with a quilt around you....in the sunshine. It has been snowing here for days and the sun isn't out. Hope it gets better for our trip for Thanksgiving next week....at least I pray that the roads will be dry. Take care Granny!
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, it is time to think about fruitcake. I usually make mine the weekend after Thanksgiving. I'll have to decide if I'm going to make it this year. Probably.
ReplyDeleteI would love to grab a quilt and sit on the porch with you!! That would be great.
ReplyDeleteThe cake looks yummy. Some of my favorite recipes come for old church cookbooks. I have refused to feed the birds every day. I now fill the feeders every two or three days. It just got too expensive... the birds were eating better than we did! Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteThere aren't as many birds as usual at my feeders either. And, I don't have a cat! I haven't made a fruitcake in several years, but now I am thinking this might be the year. Yours looks yummy!
ReplyDeleteThe cake looks delicious. I still like to be known as Mrs. Dennis Queen, but I don't remember the last time anyone called me that. I'm very proud to be his wife. Cookbooks like yours are the absolute best. Tried and true recipes, passed down through the years.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Don't laugh, but we along the Gulf Coast are getting "winter" temps already!! (Winter for us)...in the 40° F range.
ReplyDeleteBet the cake baking in the oven made the house smell good! Love the shots of your recipe book.
That cookbook holds a lot of history as well as recipes. I have a copy of it, probably newer than yours, with a golden yellow cover. It's equally tattered and stained. Fruitcake is in the plan for here, too, probably on Friday. I don't eat it, but my husband and children like it, so I make it for them.
ReplyDeleteI adore old cook books. The recipes are usually simple with easy to find ingredients and most often things that you already have in the pantry. Now, how are you going to resist eating that cake before Christmas?
ReplyDeleteYour baking always looks so inviting and tasty, GM :) I bet that was delicious. I do remember when it was proper to name a married lady with her husband's name. My mother was picky about that -- she wanted letters addressed to her, to use my daddy's name, and NOT her own name, which she thought would indicate that she was divorced. Goodness!
