Let's have the bad news first and get that over with. I was so sure I had done away with all the affected buds of my Daylilies last year so I had high hopes of escaping them this year. Unfortunately I must have missed one or two and now I'm finding buds that are distorted and full of awful grubs.
Hemerocallis gall midge has one generation a year.
Adult midges emerge in May-June and lay eggs on the developing flower
buds of daylilies. The larvae feed inside the buds causing them to
develop in an abnormally. Instead of being long and slender, infested
flower buds are shortened and have an enlarged conical shape.
The way I understand it the grubs develop then fall to the ground where they spend the winter only to emerge the next year and the cycle starts all over again.
Aside from that problem everything is growing and looking good. We're currently having hot weather
( 30C and over) so there's a lot of watering being done.
Knowing that hot weather was coming I used my oven to make sure we wouldn't run out of desserts.
I baked a cheesecake and also a Mixed fruit "Impossible Pie". You know how fond I am of those Bisquick recipes. (And, NO, I don't know why I am suddenly writing in italics.)
On our walk this morning we saw this car which may or may not have been a Bentley with right hand drive. The chauffeur was sitting in it waiting in front of a nearby house. He was still sitting there when we came back so I got my camera and took a picture. I would have liked to get a better angle but I felt very obvious with him just sitting there looking bored but not friendly.
That's it for today. Thank you for visiting.
One of the gardeners on a recent tour was telling us about the daylilly bud grub. We were not aware. Now that you have reminded me I really need to look closely at our daylillies as they are just coming into bloom. So much pestulance. :-(
ReplyDeleteI checked and we have the pestulance too. I'll be out picking off buds tomorrow morning.
DeleteSorry about your day lilies!!
ReplyDeleteDesserts look yummy.
I got rid of all my Asian lilies because of a red bug that was attacking them I tried to battle them but they won I pulled them all out. good luck with your day lilies.
ReplyDeleteHmmm I wonder who he was waiting for???
Cathy
I ask me, what was the reason, that the driver waited so long -
ReplyDeleteSorry for the lilies- I don't love this kind of insects!
Enjoy your delicious sumer-pies in these hot days!
So sorry to hear about your daylilies. Hope things will get better in that department although it may take some time! Your cheesecake and pie both look delicious. As I have hinted before....sure wish I lived next door to you! You are such a good baker! Sorry about your hot weather....I don't much care for temps that high. Here we have been lucky so far with most temps in the 70s. F., Take care Granny!
ReplyDeleteGranny Marigold your sweets look very delicious!
ReplyDeleteDaylilies needs attention.
I hope you are able to escape them!
The car is great,
I can think of a whole story about its owner!
It is so horrid to see lovely plants ruined by insects.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the lilies...but look at those good treats! Yummy!!
ReplyDeleteHot here, also.
hugs
Donna
I must check my daylilies for the grub. We arrived home last night and have spent the morning in the garden dealing with SO MANY WEEDS! What a good idea to bake ahead for the heat. Stay cool.
ReplyDeleteIt is so disheartening when our cherished plants are attacked by bugs or blight or even untimely weather patterns. We wait all year for the brief flowerings. Disappointing when we can't enjoy our favorites.
ReplyDeleteI guess a lot of chauffeurs have plenty of time to get bored. Those grubs sound awful, your poor flowers. Hopefully this year you will be able to get in control of them. Your desserts look delicious :)
ReplyDeleteSorry about the flowers. It was smart to do the baking before it got too hot, it looks so good! Beautiful car!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a vicious cycle with those buds. I hope you can get rid of them some how or other. Cheesecake sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteThat is a neat car...wouldn't you like to know the story behind what he was doing/who he was driving for?
That midge grub problem sounds icky -- I've never had daylilies, neither have I ever heard of these grubs. The grub of a midge must be very tiny...? But so are aphids, and you get a few of those and it's not a tiny problem.
ReplyDeleteI feel that I should have at least eaten some pie on the 4th of July, even if I didn't bake one. Oh well, not every day can be perfect! I hope to get one made before the end of July at least. It will be a big event so I hope I can remember to take a picture; your cheesecake and pie are inspiring me, and making me hungry just seeing their pictures.
Gretchen Joanna
So sorry about the lilies.
ReplyDeleteYour sweet desserts look delicious.
All the best Jan
I'm sorry to hear about the grubs and your day lilies. But your desserts look delicious! I hadn't thought about doing the mixed berries with the impossible pie recipe. Thank you for the inspiration because I have plenty of different types of berries in our freezer.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of those grubs on daylilies. Funny though, I noticed an orange daylily blooming in the ditch behind the house and thought to myself, that lily looks deformed. Wonder if it could be that?? Your desserts always look so delicious.
