A Goldfinch and Some Cherries

I'm finally sitting down and will attempt a post. It seems the days go by too quickly and I don't get everything done. Actually, whoever does get everything done?
Our weather has been fairly pleasant but with our sandy soil I've had to water quite a bit. Higher temperatures are predicted starting tomorrow so I'll be out there with the water hose (or getting DH to carry heavy pails of water from our rain barrels.

This little goldfinch visited one of our feeders this week.  I wasn't quick enough to get my camera so the picture is from the internet.  Did you know that Goldfinches are said to carry spiritual messages, encouraging resilience and the need to embrace changes gracefully.  Hmmm. I can definitely use such a message.

We bought some delicious  B.C. cherries. Mostly we just ate our fill  but I did make some Rhubarb & Cherry jam. It turned out fine but it tastes much more like rhubarb than cherry.

We had a lovely family BBQ for Canada Day.  The weather was perfect, not too warm and with a light breeze.  Youngest Son manned the BBQ and everyone enjoyed the food.

Tomorrow is grocery shopping day so I need to figure out a list since going shopping without one is not a good idea.  Do you shop with a list too? Or maybe just walk the aisles and look for inspiration?

Thanks for coming by.

Happy July 4th to all my American followers

  2. Happy Canada Day to you. I'm just sitting here eating my first few cherries - probably from B.C.

  3. Mmmm, cherries! You make me long for summer to come again.
I never knew that about goldfinches - I just hope I can remember it now for the next time I see one.
Yes, I always make a grocery list. I got in the habit when we lived in the countryside and if you forgot to get something you would have to wait a week to get it. Now, I doubt I could survive without it :)

  4. Goldfinches are my favorite birds! I didn't realize that they carried spiritual messages...but I, like you, could use some of that!

Your jam looks delicious. And the cherries look yummy.

I most always have a list when I go to the grocery store. Once in a great while I go without one...but that isn't always a good thing. ;)

  6. The Goldfinch is so lovely. He visited you not in vain to bring you a good message. The best message we can get, is the message of the grace of the Lord..
The jam looks delicious! Rhubarb and cherry is an interesting combination. I think, your fans will love it!
Yes, I agree with you: I'm also not able to finish all ,I would like to bring to a good end in one day.

  8. I have spent much of this beautiful day baking a berry pie and making a macaroni salad for our 4th of July celebration dinner tomorrow. Then there was the clean up. I did take a few minutes to pick some flowers for the kitchen table. Now I'm sitting, although I feel like I should be outside. My recliner is very comfortable though.

  9. Thanks Granny, for your sweet July 4th greeting. Your jam looks delicious. How nice to see a goldfinch at your feeder. At our last house we saw so many beautifully colored birds.....here....not so much. We are in a forest, but don't get the variety of birds we had a few hours south of here. Take good care! Hope it doesn't get too hot by you.

  10. It really is very relaxing and pleasant to listen to a goldfinch!
Your jam looks great, I have never tasted jam like this (mix)!
I usually shop with a list
because otherwise I won't get what I need with so many choices in the supermarket!!
Have a nice day Granny Marigold!!

  11. Beautiful bird, and hope it brought good messages :) I too shop with a list. If I have forgot it at home, there is always something I forget to buy. I mostly do my grocery shopping in the same shop, so I write the list in order to the shelves. If I go to another store I run back and forth to find what I need :)

  12. A list is necessary for me...it even helps if I have just written one...but more and more I need the actual list and a pen to mark things off as I buy them. Or I will miss something.

  13. I like that about the Goldfinch. I need that message too. And yes, I often shop without a list, because I usually get the same things, generally just staples like sugar and coffee, then laundry and cleaning supplies, butter, maybe sour cream, fresh fruit, and in winter a few fresh veggies. Most everything else we already have stored away or coming from the garden or those food giveaways. We are lucky, I know.

  14. We used to have so many Goldfinch but this year they have been few. How lovely to have cherries, they are not grown here.

  16. We have Gold finches all the time here. That is a different mixture for the jam I bet it is so good.
I try to keep a list going on the frig all the time when I take the last can or bottle of something I write it on my list.
Happy Canada Day a bit late

  17. I am wishing I had planted sunflowers again this year for the gold finches. They might also attract the house finches which seem to have moved on. They were my favorites. Grocery shopping is not my favorite task.
