Sponge Cake

I have no intention of minimizing the impact of all the wildfires. The loss of homes and businesses as well as all the forests is heart-breaking. But when I saw this silly cartoon posted I had to chuckle.

I did bake yesterday....first the cheese buns then I made a sponge cake. I found a great recipe for one on British Chef's Table. It's called  Mary Berry Sponge cake with oil.  I reduced the sugar from 1 cup to 3/4 and I may try reducing it even more next time.  I like that the recipe calls for only 1/2 cup oil whereas other sponge cake recipes called for 1 cup oil or 1/2 butter.

My bush beans are ready for picking and I'm going to make Green Bean Soup for supper. A vital ingredient is Summer Savory. Are you familiar with this delightful little plant?  The seeds are hard to find so I depend on mine self-seeding. One year I must have hoed out the tiny volunteers in spring. Luckily my sister had seeds and shared them. I do grow Winter Savory and that is a perennial but it's flavor is much milder.

It blooms with the sweetest little flowers.

I think I'll go sit on the porch now and read before starting that soup. What are you having today?  With the time zones being what they are you probably already had your evening meal. In that case, how was it?

  1. We just spent hours working in the garden and for dinner I am claining my free birthday burger for Red robin. Tom will have to buy his, :-)

  3. Mary, around here it is 8pm, time to prepare dinner. Tuna pie left over from lunch and vegetable soup.
I haven't used savory, I'll see if I can find it and try it.

  4. I have never heard of Summer Savory...or Winter either for that matter. I am going to try to think and look it up when I get this comment finished. This may sound like a dumb question, but how do you make Green Bean soup?

  5. Ha....I like your cartoon. I never heard of green bean soup.....what do you put in it, besides the beans? Tonight I had scalloped potatoes and ham.....hubby's stomach was bothering, so he just had soup and toast. So sorry to hear about your fires!

  6. Your bean soup sounds intriguing (I've not tried anything like that). We are having buckwheat and mushroom risotto for our dinner tonight :)

  7. It's way too hot to bake here. Although it was only 91F, the "feels like" temperature was 102F. We went out to lunch as we do most Thursdays and just had sandwiches and chips for dinner. I bought a roasted chicken at Costco yesterday and we had sandwiches made of it tonight. Yum!
I miss having green beans from the garden more than anything else. I hope your soup was delicious. I'm sure it was. :-)

  8. You do a great job of balancing sugar and fat in sweets,
I try to do the same!
My dinner was a yogurt with honey and walnuts!
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  9. I love beans from our garden! My dear husband is a good vegetable-planter!! Best for beans is really Summer Savory. We don't have this sensitive plant in our garden. Maybe we will have it later, like you!... I learn from you!
I'm sorry about the burning forests!!! In the South of Europe they also have great problems with the heat. Here in the Bavarian Forest we have fine warm weather now..

  10. I am hoping to be able to pick the first of the green beans from my garden in a day or so and then, like you, I will make soup using the Summer Savory as well. I just love pinching a small stem of it as I walk past it in the garden!
    Cute cartoon, by the way.

  11. I've never heard of green bean soup, you have me curious. I tend to only make and eat soup in the winter. And now I'm going to have google your plant and your soup. Suppose to learn something new each day, so thanks to you...I will be good for today.

  13. I've made Mary Berry's sponge cake. I enjoy both her recipes as well as Paul Hollywood's.

We had crockpot saucy pork chops, green beans from the garden, a yellow squash casserole and cucumbers with a mayo/vinegar/sugar dressing.

  14. I have purchased Summer Savory as a dried herb and have used it in soups. It has been quite a while since I even made beef vegetable soup.

  15. Green bean soup sounds wonderful, and yes, summer savory is a must! We're having grilled salmon for dinner tonight, along with salads.

  16. I think I did plant summer savory one time but I don't have any currently. Nor the winter type! I do have oregano, rosemary, sage, basil, mint, and thyme.... I think that's my herb collection. But I could be forgetting something. They are scattered all over.

  21. Not doing much! Too hot outside. I did the shopping early morning, bought some paint to paint the inside of a cabinet and I only make salads too much heat.

  22. I'm responding MUCH later, but today I made homemade chicken noodle soup (with carrots, celery and onion), and I made a half recipe of Tasha Tudor's cornbread on the side. A nice dinner!
