Lebkuchen and Christmas Cactus

Remember the Ideals magazines that I bought last week at the thrift store?  There were interesting-looking recipes in there and I thought I'd make this one.  I failed to read all the way through the recipe before starting and I also mismeasured the honey but they turned out okay. I am not fond of them but DH thinks they're good and will take them along to Gleaners to share at coffee time.

Just an aside: The volunteers are currently working on the 10,000 lbs of sweet peppers they received and apparently 40,000 lbs of onions are on the way. I dread when he works with onions because he comes home smelling like them but they definitely make a wonderful addition to the dry soup mix that Gleaners makes (to send to poor countries).

Both my Christmas Cactus are blooming now and as you can see one is white and one yellow/peach coloured.

Teacups # 29 and 30 are some of my Autumnal-toned  ones .

Thank you for stopping by,  GM

  5. Hello! I'm glad I stopped to visit before I went to bed. I remember my grandmother making those same bars. We thought they were delicious. Your cactus' is beautiful. I used to have an Easter cactus that I gave away when we moved out of the house.

  10. I love the autumn teacups! The Lebkuchen looks good. We always put some potash in with ours, too. Probably not good for folks, though. Wow, the Gleaners really do a LOT of work. I didn't realize. That's a lot of poundage. Tonnage!

  14. I'm also impressed by the Christmas cactus. For many years I have been propagating from just one parent plant, so all of mine have been the same hot pink color. But I inherited a new one in a pot and it seems really healthy. I wonder if it might bloom in a slightly different color... I can hope!

  16. For every season a teacup, for every weather and every day. This is special culture.

I never saw a yellow Christmas-cactus. Okay, it seems to be an autumn-cactus :)

Your kitchen always has special experiments and fine food.

  17. The Lebkuchen sure looks good. That is the first recipe I've seen that calls for citron. We have never eaten the citron melon preservis I made. Oh, maybe there is a difference in citron and citron melon. Your Christmas cactus is just beautiful. I've never seen one with yellow blooms.

  19. Your Lebkuchen really looks delicious, but I guess looks can be deceiving, lol! How amazing that the Gleaners take care of so much produce, I know that must be so much work for them. Beautiful autumn teacups, hope you get to enjoy a lovely cup of tea in them with a friend :) Blessings to you dear friend, always enjoy your posts!

  21. I love your yellow/peachy cactus! Too bad I can't just pop in for a cutting and a cup of tea! Looks like you'd have more than enough teacups for all your blog followers, lol. In regards to the produce brought in to Gleaners, I simply can't imagine the size of shipment that 40,000 pounds of onions would be! The workers must all be in tears from all those fumes or do they wear protective eyewear?

  22. What a green thumb you have! I'm sure the German cookies were great! Gleaners sounds like a good thing to be involved in. I remember chopping lots of onions when I worked at the deli. Not sure I could survive all the crying, lol. Pretty tea cups! :)

  23. Wow, that is a lot of peppers and onions to process. How nice that your husband gives his time to such a wonderful organization.
Your lebkuchen looks tasty. Kind of a shame that you weren't that fond of them. At least it sounds like they won't be wasted.
I have not seen cactuses in those colors. How pretty!
